Volunteer Spotlight: Josh Sagona

When Josh Sagona came to the Bay Area in May of 2017 as an active duty Coast Guarder and quasi-environmentalist, he found himself with plenty of off-duty spare time and immediately sought out a productive way to meet people with similar passions. Luckily for us, he found Surfrider, and we quickly elected him to our executive committee as Volunteer Coordinator. If you’re interested in volunteering with Surfrider but are unsure exactly what you want to do, Josh is your guy! He helps new volunteers navigate our opportunities, and you can find him leading many of our beach cleanups, which we host three Sundays per month. (Check out our events and beach cleanup calendar here.)

Josh is the kind of guy who doesn’t eat fish because he believes the way it’s manufactured is unsustainable and finds it outrageous when people leave the beach a mess. Josh lives by the firm belief that if someone has the ability to do something good, they simply should. As he puts it, “I have the time to do more, so I do, that’s just the way I see it!”

A native New Jerseyan, Josh moved to South Carolina to study Marine Science at Coastal Carolina University. He surfs, skateboards, and snowboards and enjoys playing disc golf in Golden Gate Park. He’s a musician, too, and plays the guitar, ukulele, and saxophone.

Josh’s book collection includes eclectic, water-themed titles about tides, seafaring, ocean navigation, and how to read water; "The Eight Pillars of Greek Wisdom: What You Can Learn from Classical Myth and History"; and "The 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization."
