Our campaign to restore Ocean Beach south of Sloat Boulevard is undergoing final engineering and design. The work will be completed in two phases:
Phase One: Portions of the Great Highway south of Sloat Blvd (between the Westside Pumpstation and the Oceanside Treatment Plant) will be realigned away from the water. Then, a coastal walking trail will be constructed linking Sloat Blvd to Fort Funston. The work is due to begin in early 2020. Currently, we are fighting to ensure that temporary parking improvements will be added during phase one.
Phase Two: Phase two will involve the complete removal of all the rock and rubble littering the shoreline, the removal of the Great Highway south of Sloat Blvd, and the restoration of our beach and sand dunes. With the additional shoreline, sand dunes will more effectively serve as the primary erosion control device. To protect the wastewater infrastructure against wave-driven storm damage, a buried seawall is planned. Phase two should also involve a new coastal access parking lot to replace the main Sloat parking access. The site for the new lot is still to be determined, and this construction is slated to begin sometime after 2021.
